Master of Arts (MA)
The following paper examines issues surrounding my experience with diversity training in Bulgaria over the course of several months during 1994 and 1995. I was engaged in cross-cultural work as a trainer and training consultant for the Open Education Center, at that time a recent addition to the sizable Soros Foundation and Open Society Fund-Sofia. My position allowed me to gain insight into the workings of a Bulgarian NGO and experience firsthand the rewards and frustrations of being a trainer in a country where the language and culture were alien to me. The director of Open Education Center, Dr. Rumen Valchev, also heads to his own NGO by the name of The Center for Negotiation and Conflict Resolution. The activities of Open Education and The Center for Negotiation and Conflict Resolution are closely linked and, while most of my experiences revolve around work with the former organization, some experiences used for the writing of this paper derive from the latter.
