Abstract

Program Overview:

This paper describes the cross-cultural pre-departure orientation program for a group of twelve Japanese management personnel, who had been assigned in the U.S. to work for Kobe Steel Company of Japan joint venture companies. The group's expected time of overseas service was between 3 and 5 years with the possibility of extensions. This cross-cultural training program was a 10-week program consisting of about 20 two-hour sessions.

This paper does not discuss extensively the characteristics of the Japanese and American cultures since there are already many excellent books on the subject: a number of them are listed in the bibliography. However, as the training program moves from culture general to culture specific some specific cultural information is supplied to support the training activities.
