Abstract

There can be major obstacles between desiring and realizing sustainability. These challenges are both conceptual and practical. This paper relies on the field of Knowledge Management to help explore and understand what can be done to address these concerns with sustainability. A case study was performed at Madison Area Technical College, which is utilizing a knowledge management strategy that has become its base for their sustainability initiative. Along with this research, this paper presents a conceptual shift for sustainability in the light of understanding gleaned from knowledge management and the author‘s experience. The last portion of the paper identifies ten areas of intersection between knowledge management and sustainability that highlight the challenges to overcome and the way forward, thereby describing the impact that knowledge management can have on sustainability.
