Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate accountability at the Environmental Service Learning Initiative (ESLI) with the intended purpose of future organizational application. This research project took place between June 2009 and June 2010. The study examined 1) how individuals were assessed to be a part of ESLI, 2) how leaders provided on-going support, and 3) how the organization created or removed barriers to accountability. The study included facilitating an Appreciative Inquiry workshop, followed six to eight months later by interviews and a survey.

Results of the investigation reveal that while a love-based accountability action plan offered ESLI the opportunity to become an “exceptional model” of an organization, high levels of inconsistency in individual assessment and alignment, leadership relationships, and organizational support were barriers to enduring excellence. The study also suggests further research for love-based accountability methods with implementation as a focus.
