Abstract

DePaul University, an institution founded by the Vincentians in 1898, is the largest Roman Catholic university in the United States. DePaul serves over 20,000 students who reflect a broad diversity of ethnic, religious, geographic and economic backgrounds. It has eight colleges, one of which is the School for New Learning (SNL), established in 1972. SNL is dedicated to individualized student-centered education and serves a more non-traditional base than DePaul’s other colleges. Non-traditional is typically a student over the age of 25 who is not full-time.

At DePaul’s SNL a new course was introduced in the fall semester of 2002, the “Practice of Peace.” This course was the first in a series of courses that will eventually become a Peace Studies minor at the institution. The course instructor, Anthony Nicotera, would like to see a full-fledged Peace Studies Major.
