Abstract

This research paper primarily reviewed the role of civil society in the Poverty Reduction Strategies (PRS) currently subscribed to by many developing countries. Using a case study methodology, I examined the case of Ghana whose efforts exhibited several challenges in terms of internal organization of civil society for development work. My research question seeks to determine the role of civil society in the Poverty Reduction Strategy (PRS) in Ghana. Other sub-questions arising from it, evaluate the role of international financial institutions and major bilateral donors in the PRS in Ghana? I conducted interviews of and administered questionnaires to officials of major institutions coordinating the activities of civil society in Ghana. I also reviewed extensively publications by the World Bank and some major bilateral donors who are involved in poverty alleviation programs in Ghana and other developing countries.
