Abstract

- In 2010, Sebastián Piñera won the election for the Chilean presidency, ending the twenty year political reign of the Concertación, the governing coalition comprised of political parties of the center-left. The fall of the Concertación to the Coalición por el Cambio, the center-right coalition, was especially significant as it came at the end of Michelle Bachelet’s presidency; Bachelet was almost universally popular and maintained unprecedentedly high approval ratings during her presidency. However, the cleavages within the Concertación and their antiquated economic ideas ultimately caused their downfall; they seemed unable to escape the dictatorship and their view for Chile was thus inevitably set in the past. Meanwhile, the Coalición por el Cambio managed to recognize that they needed to utilize a rhetoric that would emphasize the need for a forward-thinking and developing population and country. Thus, Piñera’s election to the presidency revealed that the Chilean population is changing; this new generation of Chileans is more interested in creating a modernized, developed country able to compete globally than in rectifying the problems of the past.
