Abstract

Research Question: What are the problems in accessing health care and health care information that migrants face during the coronavirus pandemic in 2020?

Objectives: The primary objective of this study was to characterize the health situation for migrants in Chile in the context of the coronavirus pandemic. Secondary objectives are to describe the barriers that migrants face with access to health and the healthcare system, to describe the perceptions and experiences that migrants have of the health care system, and to explore the different programs and campaigns that have helped migrants during the coronavirus pandemic with medical knowledge and care.

Background: In recent decades, migration to Chile has increased dramatically from many countries such as Peru, Venezuela, Columbia, Bolivia, and Haiti with the population born outside of Chile having grown more than four times in 15 years. The migratory pattern has changed as the number of migrants who migrate to Chile and from which countries have changed even in the last decade. Circumstances with the migration process often increase the physical, social, psychological, and economic vulnerability of migrants which exposes them to risks to health. Additionally, the recent coronavirus pandemic has drastically changed the world and the current healthcare situation. Like other countries in the world, the pandemic has affected Chile and the lives of those who live in the country including migrants.

Methodology: The study was an exploratory and qualitative study. Two interviews were conducted online as well as two interviews available to the public through online platforms. They were interviews of people who worked with migrants and in health care in general. Their answers to a series of questions were analyzed and categorized accordingly.

Results: The results show that in general, there is a lack of information about COVID-19 and its effects on the life of all people in Chile, since there is only a limited amount of information available to the public. This lack of information also includes specific information on the migrant population. There are few government-level health campaigns specifically for migrants to help with health education on COVID-19, although there have been initiatives to initiate this with the help of migrant organizations and communities both globally and locally. The situation of discrimination and stigmatization against migrants and an unsupported and discriminatory discourse on their role in the spread of the virus has also increased.
