Bi-Cultural Awareness Training for Educators
The focus of the training is to create a three-hour workshop aimed at exposing educators to the complexities of biculturalism. Having bicultural students in the classroom allows for increased sensitivity amongst educators. This training will go through a process where participants (educators) will understand how cultural identity is formed. After this process bicultural identity development models will be introduced to show how bicultural students have many complex issues that are merging to develop their identity. Understanding the different developmental stages introduced, there will be a focus on the assumptions and identity development of teachers as a step in creating an effective learning environment. An issue that will be emphasized is bilingualism in bicultural development. A brief history of bilingual policies in the United States will be addressed.
