Abstract

This research highlights the evolution of Palestinian Non-Governmental Organizations (PNGOs) in Palestine. These PNGOs have been providing services, defending Palestinians' rights, empowering citizens and struggling as steadfast catalysts for a more democratic and pluralistic society. With the creation of the Wall built by Israel in 2002, the function and ability of PNGOs to carry out their missions has been severely affected. In this paper the specific effects are examined. This research measures the impact of the Wall by using questionnaires and phone interviews with Palestinian local NGOs to determine what kind of obstacles the construction of the Wall has created. In addition, it examines the reality facing these NGOs, as well as the coping mechanisms or adjustments they have developed since the construction of the Israeli Wall in 2002. This research finds a positive correlation between the construction of the Wall and the capacity NGOs in Palestine. The Wall is a physical obstacle which impedes NGOs from executing their programs and activities and precluding contiguity between them, which disables their networking, connections and coordinating. Surveying NGOs in Palestine for ways in which the construction of the Wall have impeded their functioning and capacity is instrumental in developing policy interventions to better assist the NGOs in providing the much-needed services to their clients. This research shows the weak points in the capacity of the PNGOs due to the Wall, and will be helpful for international NGOs, national governments, and individuals who are working to ensure that humanitarian conditions on the ground in Palestine improve.
