Abstract

The theme of this project is the Chilean education system in terms of Human Rights and, particularly, the child’s right to education. It sought information about the Chilean education system through its history, its evolution, its current methods, its strengths and its weaknesses to find the origin of the profound inequality that the system suffers and also perpetuates. To obtain this information, both primary and secondary sources were used as well as interviews of various people who participate, directly or indirectly, in Chilean primary education. Although superior education in Chile is also a current challenge, as a human right, the majority of the world agrees that every child deserves a basic education, so this work follows that common standard. After sorting though several factors, it has concluded that the system of education in Chile is causing distress because there are two main objectives in conflict. The principals of neoliberalism, which are relatively new to Chile, collide with the social and communal history, during which education was always free, and encroach upon the rights of the people. Now, while economic growth modernizes Chilean society, there are many people that are resisting this shift and calling for a reversal or another type of change. Without changing in some capacity, Chile risks doing itself great harm by producing a citizenry pervaded by discontent, divisiveness and futility.
