A comparison of best practices in social entrepreneurship to microenterprise programs operating business enterprises


This research paper compares what the author considers to be the "Best Practices" in the field of social entrepreneurship to the practices of four microenterprise organizations: ACEnet, Appalmade, the Neighborhood Development Center and Mountain Microenterprise Fund. Although the sample is one of convenience, the information included in the paper can shed light on the field of social entrepreneurship to any person or organization interested in the field, especially those working in the field of microenterprise development. This research, collected via semi-structured interviews, shows how the organizations incorporated "Best Practices" into their social enterprises. Each of the parent nonprofit organizations have benefited from operating social purpose enterprises through positive public relations and being seen as more knowledgeable in business.
