Abstract

This project attempts to understand the processes of politicization of the youth of El Alto, with a special focus on the events of October 2003. I worked with and interviewed a number of youth from the Public University of El Alto (UPEA), principally from the department of sociology. In these interviews I focused on the conditions of life in El Alto, their memories of participation in October 2003, and their thoughts on today’s political process. As a result of their participation in various social struggles, but especially in the social uprising of October 2003, these youth have created a political identity that is non-conformist, critical, and rebellious. This project focuses on their stories and the process of politicization, but also on the consequences that this politicization has in present day Bolivia.
