The Montana/Kumamoto Sister State Relationship: A Case Study in Sister State Related College and University Level Exchanges
Abstract
The American State of Montana and the Japanese Prefecture of Kumamoto have been sister states since 1982. The sister state relationship was a suggestion of the then American Ambassador to Japan, Mike Mansfield, to state level government officials from both areas. (Yakeshi, pg. 7) Before becoming Ambassador to Japan, Mike Mansfield was a senator representing the state of Montana in the U.S. congress. Beginning in 1942, Mansfield taught Far Eastern history at the University of Montana in Missoula, Montana for a total of five years. (Oberdorfer, pg. 42)
Since the start of the relationship, ties have formed through business, governmental and educational exchanges, and at the private level. The focus of this capstone will be the exchanges that take place through the public and private four year colleges and universities in Kumamoto and Montana.
