Abstract
Preface:
In the summer of 1986, members of CUNA Mutual Group's Human Resource Employment had a discussion with Milton McPike, Principal of Madison East High School, Madison, Wisconsin. The discussion focused on ways for CUNA Mutual to become more visible in the Madison-area minority communities. The Harvey Williams Memorial Scholarship Program was conceptualized during this discussion. The members of Human Resource Employment obtained the necessary corporate support and financial commitment to initiate the CUNA Mutual Minority Scholarship Program.
In February 1987, members of Human Resource Employment attended a Madison-Area Minority High School Coordinators' meeting. At the meeting, CUNA Mutual representatives presented a plan to offer Madison-area, minority high school seniors two-year or four-year scholarships and summer employment at CUNA Mutual Group. The plan was well received by the meeting participants and networks were established with the represented high schools. In May of the same year, CUNA Mutual received its first applications and awarded two students with four-year scholarships to the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
