Abstract
In order to establish a context for the internationalization of higher education and the need for strategies to work toward campus internationalization in U.S. American higher education, I will begin this study with a historical perspective on the university and track some of the developments that have brought higher education to its current status in the United States of America. Following an overview of current strategies for campus internationalization, I will include a breakdown of the means by which international programs are administered at colleges and universities in the United States. This analysis will stem from the research that I have completed via a survey of institutions of higher education in the three-state region classified as Region V of NAFSA: The Association of International Educators (NAFSA). This region includes Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin.
