Abstract
Since my return from my internship with the Alianza Cultural Uruguay-Estados Unidos in February 1991, many people have asked me about my work. Trying to explain it has been challenging. I often come across blank stares or the off the cuff remark "Africa is a long way away". Uruguay is not in Africa, but in South America, a country with its own unique culture, lifestyle, habits, problems and solutions.
The purpose of this manual is to 1) provide general information to individuals about Uruguay and 2) to provide the Alianza intern with a general overview of the programs they will undertake, including responsibilities. I was fortunate in that my predecessor remained at the Alianza after my arrival. Unfortunately, much of this information was given to me in the form of notes, handouts and brief explanations. Because neither one of us had at hand established guidelines I felt it was necessary to provide future interns with a general framework in which to work.
