Abstract
Influenced by dual histories of colonialism and Apartheid, South Africans are searching for new and creative ways to address their country's current development needs. With the support of the European Union, one innovative development model and program is being put into place in five communities throughout the city of Durban: the Area Based Management Development Program.
This paper provides a background of South Africa’s history and then examines the effectiveness of the Area Based Management Development Program through two case studies. It makes the case that the Area Based Management Development Program could be extended from the South Durban Basin into other communities as a means of extending peace and prosperity in the region.
