Abstract
Dominica is a country of approximately 70,000 people located in the Eastern Caribbean. The island has numerous government funded schools as well as church funded Catholic schools. Many of these schools use corporal punishment as a disciplinary method and class sizes tend to hover around 40 students. In response to these conditions, the Pioneer Preparatory School was created in 1997 by parents "who wished to provide an enriched and stable learning environment" (Pioneer website) for their children. The majority of the parents who started the group were Dominicans who are wealthier and more educated than the average Dominican citizen. My research question is: What teaching philosophies are currently applied at the Pioneer School and do they meet the expectations of parents and the principal? Sub-question 1: What teaching methods are used in each classroom? Sub-question 2: Which teaching philosophies do these methods reflect? Sub-question 3: Which teaching methods best meet the parent's expectations of what is best for their children and which philosophies at Pioneer meet to these expectations? Sub-question 4: Which teaching methods best meet the principal's expectations of what is best for the children and which philosophies at Pioneer meet to these expectations? I feel that the answers to these questions will provide invaluable information that will lead to concrete school policies and allow the school to be sustainable.
