Abstract

The research question I sought to answer was: What are the major factors that motivate women to seek to live as refugees in India instead of staying in Tibet? I examined my research question from a phenomenological perspective. I wanted to understand why women (sometimes with their children) fled Tibet to pursue life in exile. Interviews were held to gather information about the lives of six women from rural Tibet, their decision to flee, and their escape stories. Women interviewed included two mothers who fled with children, two single adult women who fled at thirty or younger, and two young adult women who fled before age twenty.
