Abstract

The purpose of this study is to help measure the value of online orientation and training in a student's experience overseas. My research question is: What do semester abroad students taking the interactive online orientation course "What's Up With Culture" (WUPWC) report about their cross-cultural understanding, adjustment, and ability to communicate? Participants in the study were divided into two groups: Test and Control, with the purpose of comparing responses between them. The Test Group was required to complete exercises in WUPWC and reflect on their experiences through e-journals. The Control Group was not exposed to WUPWC, but was given the same journal instructions. The two groups completed similar surveys at the end of the study. Journals provided insight into the thought processes of students, and the surveys provided a standard inquiry into students' experiences. Cross-cultural adjustment and communication ability were measured by students' reflections in their journals.
