The Strategic Audit for the Tibetan Yak Cheese Project: A Case Study of the Tibetan Yak Cheese Project in Golok Township, Qinghai Province, China

Abstract

This paper presents a strategic audit for the Snowland Yak Cheese Project, which features the first yak cheese product made by Tibetans in Tibet within China, and which is a collaborative activity of the Trace Foundation and the Snowland Cheese Factory in Qinghai, Tibet. The analysis evaluates the effectiveness of the yak cheese strategies and performance to date, and makes recommendations on how the project can improve its strategic position in the future. The audit begins with an overview and analysis of the Yak Cheese Project’s history, vision, operations, and strategies. Following this, a S.W.O.T. analysis is used to identify the Yak Cheese Project’s internal strengths and weaknesses along with the principal threats and opportunities evident in its external environment. The recommended strategy section presents a summary analysis and recommendations for future adjustments to the strategy of the Yak Cheese Project and is followed by the implementation, and evaluation and control sections. It is argued that the uniqueness of the yak cheese, and the potential for greater growth and success would be based on the continuity of the project’s vision, mission, and business philosophy regarding socially responsible product and enterprise practices. It is suggested that the effectiveness and strategic ways of leveraging its diverse workforce, and continuous support from Trace are essential for this project at least for the current phase of the project development plan. However, it is argued that the decision-makers’ understanding and clear redefining of the goal and position of the project regarding its actual nature—a business- (earning profit)- for-good—and the improvement of operational efficiency at the production site in Tibet, should be urgently addressed through strategic planning and actions so as to ensure the project’s healthy development in the long run.
