Description

A

A common question shared by many, both individuals and entire post conflict societies, is how to address the trauma between victims and perpetrators impacted by violence while meeting local and international demands for peace, reconciliation and justice. In this paper I focus on an international case study of Northern Ireland, where restorative justice has been used in the community and through the government to address these issues. I explore the concept of “collective memory” and its role in feeding the conflict between Catholics and Protestants over the last 40 years. The disciplinary discussions will explore concepts of forgiveness from masters such as Azim Khamisa, founder of the Tariq Khamisa Foundation, the difference between forgiving and forgetting the past, and the role of memory in forgiveness and reconciliation. Emphasis is places on restorative justice (RJ) tools such as RJ youth conferencing, structured dialogue processes, peace circles, and forgiveness education in schools.
