Description

World Learning’s International Development Programs, SIT Study Abroad, and the SIT Graduate Institute have experienced different levels of engagement and interaction in the past 25 years. There have been both positive and negative results of these varied experiences, and over the years there have been calls for the development and implementation of WL institutional strategies and tactics to advance engagement. Donors, stakeholders, and clients now expect that international organizations will maximize their resources, both human and financial, toward the realization of their missions. Additionally, global technological advances now demand cross-border transparency and accountability even within global, complex organizations. Geographic distance and diverse product lines with distinct management structures are no longer acceptable reasons for why “the right hand does not know what the left hand is doing” or for internal un-awareness of an organization’s total global footprint and its capacity. WL will be compelled to unlock and unleash its full potential simply to remain competitive in the global community. Carol Jenkins, Sr. Vice President, IDP and Scott Lansell, Director for Civil Society & Governance, will discuss operational engagement across units by considering the potential WL has to advance the mission of the organization while also ensuring that the interests and practical requirements of each unit are appreciated and fairly considered. The discussion will use an “Engagement Continuum” framework to guide the conversation. Jenkins and Lansell will not suggest that engagement should be required or forced. They will facilitate a discussion on practical protocols for what the expectations of each party might be along the continuum. Recent case studies of IDP/SIT engagement will be used.
