Abstract

In recent years, regional integration projects in Latin America have been both strengthened and challenged due to the varying political agendas of regional leaders, especially in terms of relations with external powers such as the United States. This context complicates the construction of a Latin American identity, making it difficult to achieve, and unattractive for some political parties and countries. As a center dedicated to the “Patria Grande” or “great homeland” project, the Casa Patria Grande “Presidente Néstor Carlos Kirchner” in Buenos Aires is theoretically a key player in the formation and consolidation of a Latin American identity and of the political project aimed at achieving cooperation and integration between the Latin American states. Thus, the present investigation explores the following questions: What are the objectives of the Casa Patria Grande “Presidente Néstor Carlos Kirchner”, how does it pursue them, and what does this mean for the Latin American political imaginary? This qualitative investigation was carried out during a unique period of political transition in Argentina: the presidential elections. Given that the Casa is an institution created by the current government with a strong political party identification, the presidential elections presented a special opportunity for analysis. The investigation was carried out through interviews, visits to the Casa, and a review of the Casa’s publications. The paper presents an overview of the history and modern uses of the term “Patria Grande” in Latin America, as well as a discussion of the Casa and its actors, objectives and activities. It proposes that the Casa be conceptualized as representing a particular kind of political transnationalism situated between “transnationalism from above” and “transnationalism from below”
