Argentina: Transnationalism and Comparative Development in South America

Abstract

La inmigración es un tema que se discute constantemente en todo el mundo, por ejemplo, sobre quién es considerado un ciudadano, si una persona puede ser ilegal, cómo reforzar las fronteras de una nación, etc. Argentina, como un país atractivo para muchos en Sudamérica no es ninguna excepción. Aunque tiene leyes migratorias que consideran que todas las personas tienen ciertos derechos, hoy en día está retrocediendo. En el mes de mayo, yo hice una pasantía en la Asociación de Mujeres Unidas, Migrantes y Refugiadas en Argentina (AMUMRA), en donde investigué las oportunidades y dificultades de ser migrante en la Argentina y los factores que influyen esa migración. Profundicé este proyecto con un enfoque en el empoderamiento de la mujer migrante a través de una historia de vida. Decidí enfatizar mi investigación en las mujeres migrantes porque, en las últimas décadas, ha habido un aumento en el número de mujeres que llegan a la Argentina de países limítrofes. Este fenómeno se ha conocido como la feminización de la migración.

Immigration is a subject that is constantly being discussed around the world, for example, about who is considered a citizen, if a person can be illegal, how to reinforce the borders of a nation, etc. Argentina, as an attractive country for many in South America is no exception. Although it has immigration laws that consider that all people have certain rights, nowadays it is retreating. In the month of May, I did an internship at the Association of United Women, Migrants and Refugees in Argentina (AMUMRA), where I researched the opportunities and difficulties of being a migrant in Argentina and the factors that influence that migration. I deepened this project with a focus on the empowerment of migrant women through a life story. I decided to emphasize my research on migrant women because, in recent decades, there has been an increase in the number of women arriving in Argentina from neighboring countries. This phenomenon has been known as the feminization of migration.
