Abstract

This project is an analysis of the financial crisis in Chile between 1982 and 1983. I will begin with a summary of the crisis with respect to three variables: the origin of the crisis, the government’s intervention to confront the crisis, and the effects of the crisis. Afterwards I will discuss the implications that the financial crisis has for the neoliberal model. There are two hypotheses for this discussion. One hypothesis is that the neoliberal model caused the crisis. The alternative hypothesis is that the crisis was caused by errors in the application of the neoliberal model and other external factors. I will present both arguments and then conclude with my own analysis of whether or not the neoliberal model is an affective development model for emerging economies. Este proyecto es un análisis de la crisis financiera en Chile entre los años 1982 y 1983. Voy a dar un resumen de la crisis con tres variables importantes: el origen de la crisis, la intervención del gobierno para enfrentar la crisis y los efectos de la crisis. Después del resumen, voy a presentar las implicancias que la crisis tiene para el modelo neoliberal y también, los fortaleces y debilidades del modelo neoliberal como un modelo para desarrollar. Hay dos hipótesis para este discurso. La primera es: la crisis fue causado por el modelo neoliberal. La segunda es: la crisis fue causado por errores en la aplicación del modelo neoliberal y otros factores externos. Voy a repasar los dos argumentos y después ofreceré una síntesis con mi opinión sobre la información que encontré en mi investigación y si el modelo neoliberal es un modelo efectivo para desarrollo.
