Abstract
The Kathmandu Valley is the fastest growing city in South Asia and is developing in a haphazard manner, subsequently creating an unnecessary earthquake risk. Few papers have been published regarding the development of Kathmandu and its surroundings as a whole and relating it to earthquakes. This study conducted visits to some cities in the valley and analyzed the infrastructure, architecture and engineering, as well as city layout. It was discovered that zoning is completely absent in the region and planning attempts are unable to keep up with the rate of expansion. Further awareness, enforcement of codes, and zoning is needed to create a more earthquake resistant and resilient valley.
