Abstract
This paper deals with the teaching of English as a foreign language in Zanjan, Iran. It details the author's perceptions of the lack of student responsibilty, initiative and creativity, and how she attempted to build a classroom atmosphere which was more conductive to genuine language learning. The additional problem of being a western woman in a Moslem culture is also described.
