Abstract

Hoy en día, el concepto 'neoliberal' es utilizado de manera fea y despectiva, como una forma de golpear al sistema de libre mercado y a sus defensores. El 'Neoliberalismo', utilizado a menudo para describir la economía chilena, es visto como la fuerza detrás una sociedad dividida, aumento en la desigualdad socioeconómica, en temas tan sensibles como los sistemas de salud, educación y jubilación que no satisfacen las necesidades básicas de la gente. Sin embargo, no está intrínsecamente claro lo que conlleva un sistema neoliberal, lo que resulta en argumentos ineficaces contra una ideología ambigua. La primera parte de este estudio, a través de entrevistas con varios académicos en Chile, identifica consistencias y inconsistencias en sus definiciones individuales y saca conclusiones acerca de la comprensión de la teoría del neoliberalismo hoy. En la segunda parte del estudio se comparan los pilares ideológicos del neoliberalismo clásico, con los sistemas económicos actuales en Chile, con el objetivo de responder a la siguiente pregunta: ¿Tiene Chile una economía neoliberal?

Today, ‘neoliberal’ is an ugly, derogatory word used to bash free market systems and free market supporters. ‘Neoliberalism,’ used often to describe the Chilean economy, is seen as the perpetrator of a divided society, increased socioeconomic inequality, and healthcare, education and retirement systems that do not satisfy basic needs. However, it is not inherently clear what entails a neoliberal system, thus resulting in inefficient arguments against an ambiguous ideology. The first part of this study, through a survey of various academics within Chile, identifies inconsistencies and consistencies across a spectrum of individual definitions and draws conclusions about the understanding of the theory of neoliberalism today. The second part of the study compares the ideological pillars of classical neoliberalism with the current economic systems in Chile with the aim of answering the following question: Does Chile have a neoliberal economy?
