Abstract

The present paper is an overall study of English language instruction in Iran. Several aspects of instruction have been considered:

I. Educational curriculum in the schools of Iran, from kindergarten to eleventh grade.

II. The language background of Iran.

III. Problems in learning/teaching English as a Foreign language in public secondary schools in Iran.

IV. A close look at the two aspects of Graded English, Book 1, ( a textbook being used in the public secondary schools of Iran), as an example of the problems mentioned above.

V. A discussion of the phonemic problems of Farsi speakers learning English with a suggestion for vowel and consonant contrast charts.
