Abstract
This project involves the investigation into one aspect of nonverbal communication, gesticulation. First, I will address two basic issues of nonverbal communication: 1) the universality of nonverbal communication; and 2) the conscious/unconscious controversy. Next, I will profile recent research on human gesticulation. Finally, I will present my study of gestures used in American English and Mexican Spanish. In conclusion, I will discuss the implications this information has on language instruction.
